Teakle Saluted as Sharks Scrape Home

East Fremantle celebrated Leith Teakle’s 150th game with a thrilling four point win over East Perth at East Fremantle Oval on Saturday.

After East Fremantle’s last two losses, Déjà vu was on the lips of every Sharks supporter midway through the final term, when they lost the lead for the first time in the often-spiteful encounter.

The injury riddled Sharks where 35 points up at quarter time with Brock O’Brien kicking two of his teams seven goals.

Eight goals to East Fremantle’s six dragged the Royals back into the game in the second term, with midfielder Gary Moss bagging two goals and Michael Swan kicking three.

East Fremantle took a 24 point lead into the main break and looked the better side with Koby Stevens dominating in the midfield and Mitch Brown keeping Simpson Medalist Josh Smith quiet down back.

An even third term saw the margin stay in the home sides favor with Richard Hadley kicking two goals in an impressive display across Half Forward.

A barnstorming start to the last quarter saw East Perth take the lead for the first time in the game, as the Old Easts struggled to get first use of the ball.

A collision midway through the final quarter saw Mitch Brown come off the field with a suspected shoulder injury, adding to East Fremantle’s growing injury list.

The loss of Brown, who until then had held Smith to one goal, threatened to weaken the sharks defenses but Luke Weller stepped up to the task and was helped by Andrew Stephen, who’s uncompromising attack on the ball more often than not put himself in harms way.

Richard Hadley’s fourth goal late in the quarter sent the Shark Pit into a frenzy and gave the Sharks a three point lead.

Four minutes later Ben Bucovaz had his second goal, after threatening all quarter, to give the Sharks some breathing space with a nine point lead.

Michael Swan kicked his sixth goal not long after to get East Perth within three points and set up a tense finish.

Bucovaz had a chance to seal the game but missed, keeping the Royals chances alive.

With 20 seconds to go East Perth had one final push into attack but where beaten by the siren, which went as the ball was driven high into the Royals 50.

An elated East Fremantle side chaired Teakle off the ground to a rapturous applause from the home crowd, who were relived to see the Sharks win again after a tough couple of games.

Richard Hadley and Bradd Dalziell where the best of the Shark’s impressive midfield while Rob Young and Selby Lee-Steere performed well in the ruck and around the ground.

All three grades where victorious for East Fremantle on a day they recognised the contributions of their life members and welcomed new Life Members Steve Miguel, David Miller and Matt Gill.
