ANZAC Derby Preview

Friday, April 26, 2019 - 3:50 PM

It’s Port vs Port in the traditional Fremantle ANZAC Derby this Saturday at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.

The Sharks, who showed encouraging signs against Peel last week, will be looking to break their duck against the Bulldogs.

Harry Creasey, Thomas Marshall, Andrew Stokes, Michael Tassone and Nicholas Watson come into the 25 this week.

Tassone will play his first League game for the Sharks this Saturday, off the back of a strong start to the 2019 season in the Reserves. A product of the Peel Thunder development pathway, he made his way to East Fremantle over the pre-season in a player swap with Ben Harding. The 20-year-old, hardworking midfielder registered 17 league games across two seasons with Peel.

The football kicks off with the reserves at 11.15am on Saturday morning, in what should be a great game. After registering our maiden win last week, The Sharks will look to make it two in a row, while South Fremantle will be out to maintain their perfect start to the season.

Playing at the later time of 5pm, the Colts will be determined to return to the winner’s circle, despite missing several players through State Commitments.

The Wrightson Medal

In 2016 the EFFC Board approved the introduction of a new medal, awarded to a Shark’s player who best represents the spirit of the ANZACs in the annual Derby against South Fremantle. The Wrightson Medal is in recognition of Roy & Arthur Wrightson, who were both Premiership Players for EFFC in the early 1910’s and sadly lost their lives in France during WW1. (1916 & 1917 respectively).

The brothers were born in Fremantle and both played for football for East Fremantle Football Club, Arthur from 1908 to 1913 and Roy from 1910 to 1915.

In 1915 Roy enlisted in the 11th Battalion and landed at Marseilles, France on the 5 April 1916 to join the British Expeditionary Force. He was killed in action in France on the 30th May 1916 at Fleurbaix after less than 2 months of active service. He is buried in the Military Cemetery Rue Petillon near Armentieres, France.

Arthur enlisted in April 1916 and was in the 48th Battalion. He was killed on the 12th October 1917 at Paschendale, Belgium. There is no known grave for Arthur, with records showing some difficulty in the identification of the men in this trench. He is one of thousands whose headstone reads….“Known only unto God.”  Arthur is memorialised on the Menin Gate with the thousands of other soldiers that were never identified.

The Wrightson Medal will be presented at the Left Bank during our post match awards.
