Derby Rivals Share the Spoils

Tuesday, October 7, 2014 - 9:33 AM

Traditional rivals East and South Fremantle shared the wins two apiece from the development games played at ATOM Stadium on Friday.  The views from the coaches are below.

14’s Early

The 14’s Early squad have continued their winning form with a solid victory over South Fremantle in Round 2. The first 3 quarters of the game were evenly matched, with the young Sharks holding a 4 point lead at three quarter time. In the final quarter our boys came out firing, gaining the ascendancy through the midfield and making the most of their opportunities in the forward line with 6 goals for the term. When the final siren sounded East Fremantle had pulled away to record a 36 point victory.

It was an all-round team performance with every player making a contribution to the final result. The ball movement by our players, to transition the ball from defense into attack, was great to watch and when the game was in the balance our attack on the ball was sensational.

The team is continuing to improve with each outing and the boys are looking forward to their next challenge against Subiaco in Round 3.

East Fremantle 14.9=93  def  South Fremantle 9.3=57

Goals: Ben Elsbury (x6), Matt Koutsoukis (x2), Milan Murdock (x2), Kyle Steel (x2), Declan Knowles (x1), Tom Monaghan (x1)

Best Players: Ben Elsbury, Max Fry, Tom Joyce.

14’s Late

The 14’s Late squad got a lesson in the reality of football on Friday, against a very physical South Fremantle unit.  After a convincing win against the Tigers the boys suffered a heavy defeat.

From the outset South tackled with aggression and that seemed to put our boys off a bit around the contest.

Our boys continued to try hard, but a number on injuries not only left us a bit short numbers, it impacted on other boys being able to get required breaks in pretty warm conditions.

All is certainly not lost.  The boys were asked to reflect on the game and take out of it the good points but also consider the aspect that will require improvement.  There is always next week as they say and the boys have the opportunity to come out against Subiaco and make amends.

15’s Early

The East Fremantle 15s Early squad came up against South Fremantle in the much anticipated derby. Our boys were really fired up for the game and were looking to make amends for the disappointing hit out against Claremont earlier in the week. From the first siren the Sharks were hard at the ball and looking to move the ball fast and aggressively.

The pressure applied by East Fremantle was excellent and ensured that they enjoyed plenty of forward entries and opportunities to score. Unfortunately the Sharks were wasteful in front of goal and went into the major change 5 points down when they probably should have been 2 to 3 goals in front.

After halftime the game was locked in an arm-wrestle in which both teams displayed the ability to execute excellent passages to play. With the Dogs dominating the stoppages and the Sharks controlling general play the crowd were witness to a very entertaining game. With 7 minutes remaining in the third term the Dogs began to capitalise on their dominance in the clearances and scored 5 unanswered goals.

In the last quarter the Sharks threw everything they had at the Dogs to try and breach the gap but the dogs played sensible football to hold their 5 goal lead through to the final siren.

Whilst the result was disappointing for East Fremantle the boys were much improved from the side that played earlier in the week. Their ability to communicate, move the ball, put pressure around the contest and the way they attacked the game as a unit was worthy of mention. Aside from a 7 minute period where they let the Dogs take control of the game they were well and truly in the game if not on top in many patches.

Scott, Nilson, Brice, Hardie and Berryman all had standout games in what was a very even team performance.

The teams focus now goes to Monday where the team takes on Subiaco at ATOM stadium, 1pm.

FINAL SCORE:       East Fremantle                      6.12 = 48               defeated by                          South Fremantle  11.16 = 82

GOALS:                           Brendan Scott (x3), Ryan Berryman (x1)

BEST:                               1. # 26 – Brendan Scott                             2. # 3 – Chad Nilson                             3. # 19 – Mitchell Brice

15’s Late

The 15's Lates started where they left off against Claremont. Their tackling pressure in the 1st quarter was fantastic and resulted in a slight lead at quarter time. Had it not been for some missed opportunities the lead could have been more substantial. The tackle count was led by Nic Patat and Reid Hinton, both of whom laid tackles which resulted in scoring opportunities.

Unfortunately throughout the second quarter the boys were unable to maintain their tackling ferocity and had it not been for some wasted opportunities from South Fremantle we could have gone it a half time behind. As it was we went into 1/2 time with a slight advantage, one that we hoped to build on in the second half. Jacob Menezes controlled the half back line, repelling many of South Fremantle forward entries.

The third quarter was an arm wrestle; we had plenty of the ball and repeat inside 50 entries but couldn't hit the scoreboard. Again, missed opportunities meant we went into the last change with only a slight advantage.

We managed to hit the scoreboard early in the last quarter, which gave us a 3 goal lead, a lead which ended up being enough as the team held on for a 10 point win against South Fremantle.

From a coaches perspective we were happy to get the win, especially against South Fremantle, but there were many areas which the players need to work on, both individually and as a team.

I look forward to seeing how the players respond against Subiaco on Monday.
