Sharks feature in State Match
The WAFL State Squad will feature two Sharks in Saturday’s match against Tasmania at Steel Blue Oval, Bassendean.
Veteran State WAFL player Andrew Stephen has been recognised for his leadership abilities, named vice-captain of the side. This will be Andrew's fourth WAFL State appearance since 2012.
As a favourite for the Bernie Naylor Medal, Brett Peake has also earned himself a spot on the side. This will be Brett's first appearance in the State team, adding to an already impressive career at St Kilda and Fremantle. Brett retired from WAFL at the end of 2014, but returned in 2016 and currently sits in 2nd on the League’s leading goal scorer ladder.
In his first season with the Sharks, Matthew Watson was named in the 25-man squad, but unfortunately missed out on selection into the final 22.
After nine consecutive games, a 5 day turnaround and a recent spate of injuries the other four Sharks selected in the initial 41-player team were forced to withdraw.
Jamie McNamara has battled with minor niggles over the past four weeks and decided it was in his best interest to give his body a rest. Likewise, Brock O’Brien has been left bruised and sore and will now use this time to heal.
George Hampson’s battle with injury left him out of contention, while Liam Anthony was forced to withdraw on Tuesday after sustaining a hand injury during the Derby.
The Club wishes the Andrew and Brett the best of luck.
