Captain Confirmed: Jupp to Lead Sharks
The East Fremantle Football Club are delighted to announce that Mathew Jupp will lead the Sharks in 2021, supported by vice-captain Jarrad Jansen.
A natural mentor, Jupp has been part of the Sharks leadership group since 2015 and a vice-captain for the last five years.
The 2019 Lynn Medallist said it was a huge privilege to be at the helm.
“To Captain the Sharks is a one of the highest honours I can achieve, it’s something that I’ve always wanted to do and to finally get the opportunity, I am extremely privileged,” Jupp said.
“I am really excited; excited for what I can do for the group, excited for my leadership style to have a big impression and mainly excited to continue turning this corner and finally seeing some success.”
Coach Bill Monaghan made the announcement to the playing group at yesterday’s first pre-season session.
“Matthew was a unanimous standout choice, his attributes and qualities typify the leader we want at the club,” Monaghan said.
“We’ve made the announcement earlier than usual, but we wanted to give Matthew and Jarrad the opportunity to take leadership in the direction they want.”
Jupp said he was excited to join forces with vice-captain Jarrad Jansen.
“We’ve got a really good working relationship at the footy club and obviously a great personal connection as well through the years of playing together,” Jupp said.
“He is going to be huge asset to me to help drive the standards of our group.”
“I am really excited for the opportunity to create some elite habits among our group, to really drive the standards, and hopefully see some success.”
Jupp takes the reins from the retiring Jonathon Griffin, who led the Sharks for the last three years.
