Round 18 | Match Report

Wednesday, August 11, 2021 - 7:32 PM

The South Fremantle Bulldogs have claimed victory in the Fremantle Derby for the second time in the 2021 Optus WAFL Premiership season, defeating East Fremantle 19.9 (123) to 9.8 (62).

The Sharks clawed their way back late in the second half thanks to two quick Corey Holmes goals, leaving the margin at just 13-points heading into the main break.

Unfortunately for East Fremantle, the reigning premiers were able to flex their muscles in the second half as they kicked 11 goals to 3 to cement themselves in second spot on the WAFL ladder.

East Fremantle’s loss extends their Derby drought to a sixth season and despite having pushed the Bulldogs in both fixtures this season, the Sharks will be eager to defeat their cross-town rivals early in season 2022.

A bright spot for East Fremantle was the continued emergence of midfielder Kyle Baskerville. The 23-year-old was named the PetraClean Player of the Day for the third time in the last six weeks following his 25 disposal, 14 clearance game last week.

Luke English (21 disposals, 12 tackles) and Cam Eardley (20 disposals, 5 tackles) continued their good form in the midfield and half back respectively.

Luke Strnadica continued to impress in the ruck, recording 45 hit-outs and 13 disposals while skipper Matthew Jupp and Jamie Meade were named amongst the best on ground for their performances in defence.

Jonathon Marsh was one of two multiple goal kickers for the Sharks and he continued to lead the club’s goalkicking tally for 2021 with 24.

The Sharks face a tough challenge this weekend as they travel to Leederville Oval to take on the Subiaco Lions. Bill Monaghan’s side will be looking to defeat the much fancied Lions and build momentum heading into the last fortnight of the WAFL season.
