ROUND 1 Reserves Wrap Up
ROUND 1 RESERVES WRAP UP
The East Fremantle Reserves side got off to a positive start to season 2022, outlasting Peel Thunder by 13 points in an evenly competed game on Good Friday.
East Fremantle kicked the opening 3 goals of the game on the back of some good midfield work by new Sharks, Jeremy Goddard, Matt Williamson and Jackson McDonald until Peel wrestled back the ascendancy to kick the final 3 goals of the quarter to only trail by 2 points at the break.
The Sharks had the better of the 2nd quarter in an entertaining display, kicking 4.2 to 3 straight to open up a handy 10 point break at the half. Jackson McDonald continued to find the ball through the midfield, while Tom Monaghan, Jack Norrish and first gamer, Riley Bourne were proving dangerous up forward.
East Fremantle had the better of the play in the 3rd quarter but were wasteful in front of goal- kicking a wayward 3.5. Despite the issues in front of goal, the Sharks restricted Peel to a solitary goal to open up a handy 27 point lead going into the last. Enrique Aiken-Featherstone, last years Reserves Best and Fairest, started to have an impact after a slow start while another new player to the club, Jye Depane, provided plenty of drive off his wing.
As had been the case all day, Peel responded and reduced the margin to 8 points with 5 minutes to play before a classy Matt Williamson goal from the pocket, created from some strong forward pressure, iced the game.
Better contributors for the Sharks were Victorians Jackson McDonald (30 disposals and 8 clearances), Matt Williamson (24 disposals) and Sam Medland (14 disposals and 7 tackles) while towering ruckman Jeremy Goddard (19 disposals, 33 hitouts and 5 clearances), Jye Depane (20 disposals) and Tom Monaghan (4 goals) also impressed. Young defenders Kale Paton, Sam Collins and Alex Crowe also provided a strong contest and some run from behind.
The Sharks next head to Bassendean to take on Swan Districts at Steel Blue Oval this Saturday.
