East Fremantle Break Their Duck
East Fremantle have broken their club-record 15 game losing streak with an emphatic win over Swan Districts at Blue Steel Oval, winning 13.8 (86) to 10.12 (72).
Swan Districts challenged hard in the third quarter, reducing a 28-point deficit to a two-point deficit at the final break before East Fremantle lifted in the final term kicking five goals to three.
The Sharks effort and intensity was visible from the outset as the side laid a mammoth 93 tackles, something coach Bill Monaghan would have been very pleased by.
East Fremantle was buoyed by the return of captain Jonathan Griffin from injury who led from the front and recorded an impressive 39 hit outs.
Ryan Ambrose continued his terrific season up forward, providing one of the highlights of the game with a huge ‘hanger’ in the second quarter to go with his two goals. He was supported by Milan Murdock, Tom Monaghan and Kody Manning who consistently pressured the Swans' backline.
The midfield quartet of Kommer, Jansen, Boekhorst and Eardly combined for a mammoth 92 disposals, 24 tackles and two goals between them while tall forwards Loersch (13 disposals) and Strnadica (16 disposals, 23 hit outs) both kicked a goal and provided headaches for the Swan Districts defence.
Kyle Baskerville was lively, kicking his first league goal before finishing with two while Ryan and Bennett also kicked two majors up forward for the Sharks.
In defence vice-captain Matthew Jupp was once again outstanding, being named in the best players for a fourth consecutive week and providing a strong presence in the backline. Chris Scott and Zach Jackson also performed admirably in their first League appearances for the season.
Round 7. of the WAFL premiership season sees the Sharks take on the much improved Perth Demons at New Choice Homes Park. Bill Monaghan’s side will be looking to put in another four quarter effort and get back to back wins in front of a home crowd.
