McNAMARA TO LEAD SHARKS IN 2016
Jamie McNamara has been announced as Captain of the East Fremantle Football Club in front of his peers prior to training on Thursday. McNamara, who has come through the East Fremantle academy pathway prior to being drafted to West Coast, returned to his home Club in 2014, after a brief stint with Williamstown in the VFL, he takes over the Captaincy from Rory O’Brien, who has fulfilled the role for the past two seasons.
The process was one that was very open, with players and coaches alike voting on the values that the group believed a leader should have. After the initial vote on January 16 the leadership of McNamara, Liam Anthony, Matthew Jupp, Andrew Stephen, Josh Cuneo and Mitchell Boyle was announced. Following that announcement the leadership group, along with the senior match committee then voted again with McNamara receiving the support of the group.
Matthew Jupp and Liam Anthony were voted in as Vice Captains, with Stephen, Boyle and Cuneo also playing very important roles in driving the standards required to be an East Fremantle player. For McNamara, being voted in as Captain realises a dream for the 27 year old. “It is an honour and privilege to be announced as Captain. To have come through the development squads, to play senior football and now be Captain is amazing. I really look forward to working with the other leaders in leading this playing group. I think we have made some real progress this pre-season and with the environment that Rob, the assistants and the Club has been able to create, I’m really excited.”
The leaders will work closely with Luke McPharlin throughout the season, gaining valuable knowledge from the 256 game All-Australian star.
